Research and Development

The Norwegian Maritime Museum (NMM) has a diverse and multidisciplinary research environment.

Our research is characterized by the fact that the NMM is both a cultural history museum as well as an archaeological administrative museum with important responsibilities for cultural heritage in ten counties.

NMM employs eight academic staff members, six archaeologists and two historians. Other fields represented by our staff members include conservation science, art history, and anthropology. The museum is one of five Norwegian museums outside the higher education system recognized by the Research Council of Norway as a research institution.

The museum coordinates the national museum network for shipping on behalf of the Art Council Norway. The network has annual meetings held by the various maritime museums in the country.
