Permission for the Export of Maritime Cultural Heritage

It is not generally permitted to take art and cultural objects out of or into Norway. If one owns such objects that are older than 100 years and wishes to send them abroad as an inheritance, gift, or for sale, an export permit must first be applied for.

According to the Regulation on the Export and Import of Cultural Heritage Objects of January 1, 2007, the Norwegian Maritime Museum is the decision-making institution for maritime material, as defined in paragraph 2 of the regulation. The Directorate for Cultural Heritage is the decision-making institution for matters concerning entire vessels and boats, as stated in paragraph 6 of the regulation.

Applications concerning other types of objects are handled by institutions such as the Norwegian Armed Forces Museum, the Museum of Cultural History, the Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology, the National Library, and the National Museum. Special rules apply to, among other things, Sami material, visual arts, photography, coins, vehicles, and boats.

The application requirement is outlined in the Regulation on the Export and Import of Cultural Heritage Objects of January 1, 2007.
